Juicero Is A Real Product

Fri, Apr 21, 2017

Check out this video:

So someone posted this online and I didn’t even believe it was a real product. Not only is it a real product, it has been for over a year. This stupid “juicer” costs $699 dollars. Yes, seven hundred fucking dollars, well originally. a more recent article I found says its $400 plus the cost of produce packs. I’m not going to go to their website to find out. I imagine it’s as useless as their juicer. Why does it cost so much? It connects to the internet, that’s why! Why does it connect to he internet? Reasons! Internet of things! Even better, you can’t go to the store and buy the produce you want to juice, you “get” to purchase special packages of pre-chopped produce from Juicero that you place into the machine to juice. It’s so convenient!

I totally thought it was a joke when I saw the video. I figured it had been made by The Onion. It took three years to design this. A juicer with wifi. Why does it need wifi to connect to the Juicero cloud? I’m assuming its so they can keep tabs on everything you juice. That seems pretty creepy to me. Best case scenario is that they just use it to try and sell you more proprietary juice packs.

The fact that it connects to the cloud is stupid, but the whole special pack thing is what really pisses me off. Why would you spend extra money to not be able to juice whatever you want to juice? You should be able to control the juicer. The juicer shouldn’t control you. Gee, where have I heard this before? Oh yeah, its one of the Free Software Foundation’s early statements about software freedom:

The word “free” in our name does not refer to price; it refers to freedom. First, the freedom to copy a program and redistribute it to your neighbors, so that they can use it as well as you. Second, the freedom to change a program, so that you can control it instead of it controlling you; for this, the source code must be made available to you.

Does your juicer control you?
